He was the father of soul that didn’t let adversity stop him from making a great impact on the world, Producer Craig Alan Wilkins presents Eulogy for a Genius – a tribute to Ray Charles at the Collins Street Baptist Church Melbourne from 21 September 2024.
Frank Sinatra called him “the only genius in our business” a nickname that has contemporaries and future generations of musicians – had no qualms over bestowing him.
In a world premiere production created by Craig Wilkins (writer/director/producer) Eulogy for a Genius pays homage to the legendary Ray Charles. “It’s the realisation of a 22-year-old dream,” says Wilkins.
“Back in 2002, he and VCA student Tim Blamey formed the world’s ONLY Ray Charles tribute BIG BAND. The release of the movie RAY, with Jamie Foxx’s Oscar-winning portrayal of the music legend, further fuelled their passion. Then, on June 10th, 2004, Ray Charles left the world.”
“In 2005, the band tested their mettle at Richmond Uniting Church. 4 years later they stepped it up a notch at the 09 Melbourne Fringe Festival (after the producer won money on a quiz show) at our ‘spiritual home” of Collins St Baptist… Ray was raised Baptist.”
“We got so close,” reflects Wilkins, “but fell short of securing a producer.” The dream lay dormant until last year, when the 20th anniversary of Ray’s passing beckoned.
Eulogy for a Genius reunites most of the original band members, augmented by the cream of Oz rock and soul. Gary Constable, with his 20+ years in music, has assembled the ultimate expedition team for this musical Mt Everest. Their mission: to bring Ray Charles back to life through soul-stirring performances.
