Djuki Mala (Chooky Dancers)

Djuki-MalaFor over a decade, dance innovators Djuki Mala have been exploring and re-establishing the notions of contemporary Aboriginal performance.

Hailing from Galiwin’ku (Elcho Island) in North East Arnhem Land, Djuki Mala proudly celebrate the incredible talent and rich cultural heritage of their home. They have collaborated with some of this country’s finest throughout their careers and they are guaranteed to delight audiences across the country with this new show.

Exuberant and unique, accessible and popularist, indigenous and contemporary, funny and skilled, Djuki Mala forge together different cultural traditions and contemporary forms  of dance. Blending their contemporary experience as young people with their  traditional culture, their identity as Yolngu people remains in the foreground.

Djuki Mala continue to redefine the unique physical language they are known and loved for by marrying it with acrobatics and diverse flavours of dance and theatre, and their own keen sense of humour. Dressed in traditional costumes and ochre with gara (spears) & galpu (spear thrower), creating a work that is a marvel of timing, comedy and clowning, warming both the heart and soul.

This is a rare opportunity to engage with performers from a very remote part of this vast and diverse country. Their appearances have electrified audiences at major festivals and events throughout Australia, China and Taiwan and have attracted huge media interest.

Presented by ArtbackNT, Djuki Mala have just commenced an extensive national tour that takes in five States. For more information and tour schedule, visit: www.artbacknt.com.au for details.
