Delightfully silly anarchy! Sophie Bengough presents the Australian premiere of a camp clown cabaret exploring desire, excess and love in Cupid Reincarnate at the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre – Millari Murnmut, as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival from 3 – 12 October 2023.
Let’s wreck it all and start again. You’re invited to a raucous party that could tip itself over the edge… but only if you let it. Cupid Reincarnate is a camp musical clown extravaganza that introduces us to the fictional character of Cupida, the daughter of Cupid.
Playfully silly & naughty, this one-woman show follows the journey of our protagonist as she realises that maybe love isn’t as easy as she’d thought and that sweetness & care might be just as rewarding as the chaotic headiness of being struck by Cupid’s arrow.
Toying with the giddiness of love and the consequences of its effects- How far is too far? At what stage is consent needed when we fall in love with another? And how do you know what it is to receive love, if you’ve only ever sent it to someone else?
Emerging artist Sophie Bengough draws on the theatrical traditions of clown, cabaret & melodrama to create a night of arrows, pinatas, sequins & heartbreak. Bengough is a queer neurodivergent artist based in Naarm and has trained at 16th Street Actors Studio, Showfit, Impro Melbourne & Clowning Workshop.
Past theatrical credits include Spring Awakening (Sevenfold Theatre), Apocowitch (Witches in Britches), Goldilocks & Other Stories (Playhouse Pantomimes). In 2019, she devised and performed the cabaret, I’ll Be Seeing You: A Wartime Romance at The Butterfly Club.
