Create Your Future at the National Art School’s annual Open Day

NAS-Printmaking-Workshop-DemonstartionThe National Art School’s annual Open Day is a highlight of the year, inviting visitors onto their beautiful heritage-listed campus to learn about our courses, see behind the scenes and explore one of Australia’s most outstanding fine art schools.

Whether you’re interested in studying here, doing one of our tertiary degrees or a short course, or whether you’re curious to explore our heritage-listed campus, everyone is welcome. It’s an inspiring and fun day, getting a taste of student life at NAS.

The Open Day features live demonstrations across the artistic disciplines of painting, drawing, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture and photomedia, as well as the opportunity to talk to current students and enjoy shows in our exhibition spaces.

Speak to NAS staff at the course enquiry desk, schedule a one-on-one advice session with academic staff, or attend degree information sessions that run throughout the day.

Open Day visitors can experience NAS’s unique, studio-based practice model of learning, taught by successful, practicing artists, and appreciate why, year after year, student satisfaction is so high for the school’s Bachelor of Fine Art, Master of Fine Art and Doctor of Fine Art courses.

NAS alumni include some of the most esteemed and successful artists in Australia who are known nationally and internationally, and our recent graduates set the agenda for contemporary art as ground-breading emerging artists.

“With expert tuition and leadership from our artist educators, we teach the skills and techniques students need to articulate their ideas and support them on their journey to becoming a practicing artist, both while studying here and after graduating. It’s a 21st century art education like no other in Australia,” said NAS director and CEO Steven Alderton.

In addition to NAS’s tertiary courses, the Public Programs offer an inspiring range of short courses on campus and online, catering for ages 16+ and every artistic ability, as well as other opportunities to make and connect with art, from academic symposiums to artist talks to the Art Club for 15 to 17 year olds.

Students choosing to study at NAS not only benefit from the unique, intensive teaching model that has produced generations of Australia’s most accomplished and renowned artists, but also from joining the School’s wider community, with continuing support for NAS alumni at different stages of their careers.

In 2022 the School celebrated two significant milestones: 100 years since moving into the former Darlinghurst Gaol site in 1922, and 200 years since construction of the Gaol began in 1822. As Australia’s leading art school in the heart of Sydney’s cultural district, demand for NAS courses is high.
