Carmen, Live or Dead

TBC Carmen, Live or DeadFeaturing one of Australia’s most diverse and exciting theatre and cabaret actors, Natalie Gamsu stars in Carmen, Live or Dead, a fascinating, edgy and entertaining story of identity and survival, at The Butterfly Club for a limited season from 25 April 2017.

Carmen, Live or Dead is the extraordinary story of Carmen Frida Leon Davidovich, The Love Child of Frida Kahlo and Leon Trotsky. She is irreverent. She is salacious. She is bold. She is intersex. And it is the last day of her life. At the end of her life, Carmen takes us on a reflective journey of discovery – an orphan, a refugee, a hermaphrodite, a human.

Natalie Gamsu (Ladies in Black, Strictly Ballroom) teams up with New York Writer Craig Harwood, Helpmann Award Winning Actor and Musician iOTA (Smoke and Mirrors, Hedwig and The Angry Inch) and Multi Award winning Australian Composer and Musical Director Max Lambert (Miracle City, Strictly Ballroom, King Kong) to preview this edgy and enigmatic theatre and cabaret piece for a strictly limited Season.

Directed by Shaun Rennie (I Am My Own Wife, Rent), musical direction by Andrew Kroenert (Dream Lover), Gamsu will be joined on stage by Stefanie Jones (The Sound of Music, Once), in a unique and gripping theatrical experience that is moving, entertaining and thoroughly liberating.

A story brimming with unyielding authenticity, humour and grace, Carmen, Live or Dead celebrates difference, embraces the feminine and the masculine with joy and life.
