Picture this – 9 dancers, singing, a boxing ring, a live-stream, and a snake. Intrigued? You should be! Don’t miss the latest work by Australia’s only collective-led dance company, Dance Makers Collective (DMC), at BIG DANCE 2.0 at Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres, Parramatta this October.
A decade ago, ten independent dance artists came together to meet a need, to create together and support one another in what was, in 2013, The Most Significant Dance Event of the Year according to Dance Australia Magazine.
Ten years on, DMC returns to FORM Dance Projects and Riverside Theatres, tasking a new generation of the best dance makers in Sydney to revive the company’s founding work, Big Dance in Small Chunks. Not a remount, a reimagining: 9 dance makers, 9 new works, a smorgasbord of delectable dance.
“I couldn’t be more excited about the next generation of dance in Sydney,” said DMC’s Carl Sciberras. “This project marks a critical milestone in our history as a company breaking new ground and doing things differently.”
“Big Dance in Small Chunks was an experiment that has had a lasting impact on the dance world not only in Sydney but in Australia. The founding members of DMC who created that show 10 years ago are now leaders in the sector, creating and performing work in major companies across the country.”
“This season does this again for the next generation, the works are funny, touching, challenging and celebratory and give me hope for the future of dance in this country,” said Sciberras.
BIG DANCE 2.0 features contemporary works by dancers and choreographers from across NSW, including Australian Dance Award winner Jana Castillo, this year’s Sydney Dance Company New Breed choreographer Eliza Cooper and emerging First Nations dance artists Jye Uren and Amy Flannery, to name a few.
DMC is a pioneer in dance making in Australia, having since its inception presented 17 dance productions, in theatres, town halls, galleries, parks, street corners, balconies, on YouTube and Instagram, in cities and regional towns in almost every Australian state and territory.
BIG DANCE 2.0 takes place at Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres from 12 – 14 October 2023. For more information, visit: www.form.org.au for details.
