Betrayal

Ensemble BetrayalExploring the delicate fabric of human relationships and deceptions, Ensemble Theatre presents Harold Pinter’s most accessible and personal play, Betrayal for a limited season from 16 July 2016.

Three friends become caught in a love triangle with a difference.  As Emma and Jerry embark on their affair, guilt heightens the electric thrill of having a secret love.  But Emma’s husband Robert is also Jerry’s best friend. Will their friendship survive and how much does Robert know?  With its ingenious twist – pure Pinter – this is without doubt an affair to remember.

“Betrayal is my favourite Pinter play among many favourite Pinter plays,” says Ensemble Theatre’s Artistic Director Mark Kilmurry. “It is not just the fabulous conceit; the play’s journey from the end of the affair to beginning; but also the joy of watching three smart, successful people tangled in a web of deceit of their own making. Betrayal is a comedy of manners for the modern age.”

Kilmurry has assembled a wonderful cast for the production including Guy Edmonds and Matt Zeremes – who are best friends in real life, and Ursula Mills who is making her debut with Ensemble Theatre.

Considered one of the most influential modern dramatists, Harold Pinter was a playwright, director, actor, poet and political activist. His acting and writing career spanned more than 50 years and in 2005 he won the Nobel Prize for Literature. His legacy includes twenty-nine plays such as The Birthday Party, The Caretaker, The Homecoming, The Dumb Waiter, No Man’s Land, Moonlight, Ashes to Ashes, Party Time and Celebration; and twenty-four screenplays including The Servant, The Go-Between and The French Lieutenant’s Woman.

“Beautifully written … infinite subtlety … pain and loss are explored with poetic precision.” – The Guardian
