A chilling interrogation of deception and dependency, Mad March Hare Theatre Company in association with Red Line Productions present the Sydney premiere of Amy Herzog’s Belleville at the Old Fitz Theatre from 12 April 2016.
Young American couple Abby and Zack have the perfect life: a funky bohemian apartment in up-and-coming Belleville, Paris; a stable marriage; and Zack’s noble mission to fight pediatric AIDS. But when Abby finds Zack at home one afternoon when he’s supposed to be at work, the questions and answers that follow shake the foundation of their seemingly beautiful life.
A thrilling drama that examines the limits of trust and dependency in a world where love can turn pathological and our most intimate relationships may not be what they seem.
Director Claudia Barrie (Shivered, Dark Vanilla Jungle), has assembled an impressive cast including: Josh Anderson (This Heaven, Carlotta), Emily Eskell (Love’s Labour Lost, The Fragments), Chantelle Jamieson (Crownies, The Importance of Being Earnest), Aldo Mignone (A Place to Call Home, Danger 5), and Mansoor Noor (Safety Switch, Cleverman).
Belleville had its world premiere at Yale Repertory Theatre in 2011 before opening Off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2013. The play received a 2013 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Play and was a finalist for the 2013 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize.
Amy Herzog’s other plays include: After the Revolution (Lilly Award); 4000 Miles (Pulitzer Prize finalist, Obie Award for the Best New American Play); and The Great God Pan. She is a recipient of numerous awards, and has taught playwriting at Bryn Mawr and Yale. She received an MFA from the Yale School of Drama.
