The story of this incredible performance all began due to simple curiosity of “Would I have been friends with my dad in high school?” – sparking the brilliant writer Bob Gale’s imagination to write the incredible movie Back to the future.
After years of Hollywood success, it was time for the hit show to become a musical. Following its debut in London from 2021, its success has lit up stages around the world and thanks to the producers John Frost and Colin Ingram, Sydney now has a chance to experience thrills.

Every line was executed with care, encapsulating the spirit and resemblance of the original performers to a startling extent. From their speech to their movements, they brought an energy to the stage that kept the mood alive throughout the night.
In the story, the Doc’s invention of the DeLorean vehicle was an incredible vision, once it got started the special effects took over and the audience was sent back in time. Such a fascinating experience, not the typical musical but nothing short of brilliant.
Musical numbers were non-stop with brilliant vocals and entertaining songs, written by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard, complementing each scene well. Some stand out numbers include For the Dreamers bringing sensitive meaning and emotion to the show really enhancing the themes of the movie.
The themes of the 1950’s was brought to life with the colourful patterned hoop skirts and cuffed jeans with sleeveless shirts. Contrasting with the incredible space themed costumes in other scenes, it was hard to take your eyes off them.
The most astonishing set designs were used, changing effortlessly with the rhythm of the performance. It was highlighted by the light displays that surprised and stunned and were sparking and electric.
The theme of the sets were extremely charming for the scenes, thoughtfully bringing character and life to the stage, whether it was in Doc’s home, or the Enchantment under the Sea dance, detail was at the very heart.
The show was inspiring and it really highlighted the need to override rejection, something writer Bob Gale holds dear to the success of the film. For those who are inexperienced with musical theatre, you will not be disappointed.
It was light hearted and even if you felt let down, the special effects were enough to keep the show on track. The visuals and lighting worked to help immerse the audience and create an impressive evening that is worth a second watch.
