Having become a global phenomenon, the record-breaking Art of the Brick Immersive Experience LEGO exhibition will return to Melbourne at The Showgrounds from Friday 19 April 2024.
Based on the work of Nathan Sawaya, a former New York City corporate lawyer turned world-renowned contemporary LEGO artist, the Art of the Brick offers an entirely new perspective on art. This unique exhibit version uses over one million LEGO bricks and showcases over 100 pieces in a 360-degree environment.
After launching a successful sold-out show in Melbourne in 2011, the Art of The Brick LEGO exhibition, which is now an Immersive Experience, is returning to Melbourne as part of a world tour, with almost every sculpture making its Australian debut.
After touring 100 cities across 24 countries, the Art of The Brick Immersive Exhibition has already stunned over 10 million people worldwide and is on CNN’s list of “Must-See” exhibitions.
Nathan Sawaya has turned LEGO, a beloved childhood toy, into a lifelong obsession. He tours the world with his large-scale creations and is the only person in the world who has been both a LEGO Master Model Builder and a LEGO Certified Professional.
“We are thrilled to bring the Art of The Brick Immersive Experience to Melbourne. This city’s vibrant culture and appreciation for the arts make it the perfect home for our exhibition,” said Nathan.
The immersive environment will be brought to life through 3D video mapping and complemented by an uplifting musical score. Exhibition highlights include:
- a giant version of Yellow – Sawaya’s most famous sculpture – an installation with 250 kinetic LEGO skulls
- a 400-square-metre immersive gallery called Perniciem (Latin for ruin, disaster, and death), which is a collaboration with Australian photographer Dean West and features endangered species in their natural environments
- Infinity Rainbow – where guests can explore the weather’s many moods and encounter seven life-sized sculptures covering every rainbow colour
- Larger Than Life – a second immersive gallery featuring some of the most enormous LEGO sculptures ever made, including a 30-foot long Big Swimmer and a dazzling 360-degree digital projection
- Interactive & Shop – allowing guests to colour in their favourite LEGO sculpture and watch it come to life in 3D on the gallery’s big screen, as well as the chance to purchase take-home LEGO toys.
The Art of the Brick immerses the visitor in the world of Nathan Sawaya: a cheerful and colourful world. The artist used more than a million bricks for this exhibition, creating over 70 works of art that can make adults and children smile and reflect.
Nathan Sawaya is an award-winning artist who creates awe-inspiring works of art using only toy LEGO® bricks. His multiple global touring exhibitions, Art of the Brick, have become an international phenomenon reinventing the way people see both LEGO® bricks and art.
