Are You Lonesome Tonight

Sparc Theatre Are You Lonesome TonightBringing Melbourne audiences the wonderfully unconventional members of the SPARC Theatre ensemble, Are You Lonesome Tonight is their response to encountering both love and loneliness at the Greyhound Hotel from 20 November 2015.

Channelling the glitzy era of the 70’s Vegas Cabaret, Are You Lonesome Tonight promises a heartfelt mix of songs and stories, with a healthy smattering of sequins. Inspired by the ensemble’s mutual love of Elvis Presley, SPARC Theatre have created a touching and powerful work, and if dreams come true, maybe (just maybe)… even Elvis will be in the building?

As a part of their research for the season, several members of SPARC Theatre attended the 2015 Parkes Elvis Festival inJanuary.. Travelling 740 km to Parkes in NSW, this trip was made possible by a generous anonymous donation to the company and was initially instigated by one of the ensemble members, Maureen O’Grady – who sadly passed away before this remarkable adventure.

“Meaningful relationships and having purpose within your community is essential to wellbeing,” says Artistic Director Katie Lockett. “At SPARC our intention is to build trust, friendship, and offer creative outlet. We celebrate and give voice to people who are often not seen or heard… connecting our ensemble to their community, and allowing their creativity to shine.”

Created in 2005, SPARC Theatre is a participatory arts ensemble working with people who live in supported accommodation within, and around the City of Port Phillip. The company offers free art-making workshops for individuals living with substance-related brain impairment, mental illness or disabilities. The ensemble meets weekly to explore and develop drama, acting, singing, and other art forms.
