An Almost Perfect Thing

TBRT An Almost Perfect ThingA dark, thought-provoking psychological thriller about possession, desire and our right to the truth, The Blue Room Theatre presents Nicole Moeller’s award-winning drama, An Almost Perfect Thing for a limited season from 10 August 2017.

Tracing the story of a young girl who was abducted at the age of 11, Chloe was held captive in a basement for seven years. Now free, she has become an international celebrity who is both respected and scrutinised by the public. They want her to reveal who her kidnapper was and why she seems to be protecting him.

But Chloe won’t provide names or locations. Instead of leading police to her captor, she turns to a journalist who’s searching for a high-profile story to help revive his career, and dictates to him how her story should be told. With the plethora of recent stories surrounding abduction and imprisonment of women, Austrian woman, Natascha Kampusch for example, this play speaks to our times and unpacks complex phenomenon in a moving and imaginative way.

Directed by Gabrielle Metcalf, An Almost Perfect Thing features Daisy Coyle (The Lighthouse Girl), Nick Maclaine (Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories) and Andrew Hale (The Boat Goes Over the Mountain). Set and Costume Design is by Tyler Hill (Endgame), Sound Design by Christian Peterson (Cirque du Soleil) and Lighting Design by Rhiannon Petersen (Interrupting a Crisis).

“The play investigates the need to own our stories, the “right” of people to know the truth and understand how that truth is constructed,” said Director Gabrielle Metcalf. “It explores a side of humanity we rarely see confronted on our stages making the play quite unique in the way it confronts issues of kidnapping, control and survival.”

An Almost Perfect Thing considers the way in which the victim of an horrific crime becomes a media target, and unpacks this in a compelling way for the audience. I have not come across a play that tackles these issues in such a convincing way. It fully utilises the theatrical medium, which was one reason I was determined to stage it in Australia after discovering it in 2014 quite by accident, at a Director’s Lab in Toronto.”
