American Psycho – The Musical

With music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik and a razor-sharp book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, See You Sunday’s production doesn’t just capture the glossy nihilism of 1980s Manhattan – it slices straight through it with wit, precision, and blood-soaked brilliance.

Conor Beaumont commands the stage with chilling precision in an extraordinary performance as Patrick Bateman. He is every inch the Wall Street golden boy, charismatic, polished, terrifying, his descent into a world of moral collapse is both magnetic and unsettling.

The Cast of American Psycho photo by Matthew ChenAround him, the ensemble excels. Montana Sharp brings a fragile warmth as Jean, while Jordan Malone’s Evelyn Williams is deliciously sharp-edged. Sam Ward deftly navigates the dual roles of Paul Owen and Detective Kimball.

Jake Ameduri, Ellie Nunan, Carla Venezia, Dan Ham, Lauchlan Mant and Matthew Hearne each add vivid colour to the world of excess and decay, never missing a beat in this tight, impeccably cast ensemble.

Mark Taylor’s direction is sleek and knowing, balancing the musical’s satirical bite with moments of genuine unease. Wickedly funny, visually stunning, and unflinchingly dark, the production captures the glossy surface of yuppie culture and tears it open to reveal the rot beneath. Aaron Robuck not only steers the music with pulsating precision but also shines in his nuanced turn as Luis Carruthers.

Complementing it are Jessamine Moffett’s era-inspired costumes, Sidney Younger’s evocative lighting, and Marcello Lo Ricco’s impeccable sound design, each element combining to create an immersive world that oozes excess, menace and sophistication.

Duncan Sheik’s sleek, propulsive music melds seamlessly with iconic 80s hits from Phil Collins, Tears for Fears, New Order, and Huey Lewis and the News. The result is a soundscape that is as intoxicating as it is unsettling – an irresistible soundtrack to Bateman’s spiral into madness.

See You Sunday’s production of American Psycho – The Musical is a testament to what Melbourne independent theatre can achieve when all the creative elements align so spectacularly. A blood-soaked thrill ride that should not be missed!
