A Good Catch: Zoë

Zoë responds to the slow urgency of the climate crisis, and our inability to respectfully coexist with all species. Acrobat, fungi, cloud, nest, in symbiotic entanglements. Zoë is a multiple world with an original sound score, shimmering projection, suspenseful acrobatics and impossible costumes for circus.

Soft sculptures transform humans into hybrid entities, who must negotiate hard hats and board rooms. Zoë is a logical response to the commodification of life that is advanced capitalism.

Zoë invites audiences to find the joyful and the sorrowful in our world, exploring circus as a post-human possibility. Post-humanism challenges human arrogance and asks us to respect non-human knowledge systems. Animal, vegetable and mineral co-exist with ridiculous and profound connections.

With costumes that tell a story more than they are easy to move in, the circus must adapt and cooperate with this different version of the human acrobat. Tension builds with distorted time frames. There is nothing to get and all to consider. Zoë looks to the future with intergenerational solidarity. World, you are invited.

A Good Catch was formed in 2017 with the aim to experiment with circus. The three women at its heart are Debra Batton, Sharon Gruenert and Spenser Inwood.

Brought together by life’s adversities and a pinch of serendipity, all three began acrobatics as children and enjoy distinctive careers in Circus and Physical Theatre, individually performing with prestigious companies including Cirque du Soleil, Flying Fruit Fly Circus, Legs on the Wall, and Circus Oz to name just a few.

“…in a festival where something that has never been seen before is a rare commodity, Zoe is a mesmerising experience that is surely not to be missed for any audience member interested in the unspoken.” – Theatre Weekly Edinburgh
