The vaudevillian characters of Tom Waits music will come to life on stage in A Concert of Tom Waits Songs at Arts Centre Melbourne for two special performances.
After a nine-month sell-out run in New York, international cabaret star Stewart D’Arrietta will take audiences on a rollicking journey through Waits’ legendary songs, accompanied by renowned Australian guitarist Ross Hannaford (Daddy Cool / the Black Sorrows / Goanna), double bassist Philip Rex and drummer Danny Fischer.
With songs featured from Tom Waits’ first album Closing Time through to his most recent Orphans, Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, the inspirations, characters and lyrics of the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame member’s musical life will be explored in this gritty and gut-wrenching cabaret tribute.
Most well known for his role as musical director and co-creator of the John Lennon tribute Looking Through A Glass Onion performed by John Waters, D’Arrietta has performed A Concert of Tom Waits Songs to widespread acclaim at the Edinburgh Festival, the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Riverside Studios in London.
The show has been described by rock historian Glenn A. Baker as delivering “not just the music but the man, with Tom’s cascade of characters bathed in flickering street light”.
