Enjoy exhilarating top notes and stunning harmonies as some of our most exciting singers perform the opera hits you love best as Opera Australia and Anthony Pratt presents Opera for the People at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl on Saturday 1 February 2020.
Hosting the evening will be Australia’s most famous housewife, the inimitable Dame Edna. “I’ve never graced Melbourne’s historic Music Bowl so hosting this Opera for the People is a first and it’ll be the operatic experience of a lifetime.”
Dame Edna will be joined on stage by some of Australia’s best singers, including Soprano Eva Kong, Mezzo Soprano Angela Hogan, Baritone Simon Meadows and Tenor Arnold Rawls. They will all perform alongside Orchestra Victoria under the baton of Brian Castles-Onion.
The evening will be filled with exhilarating performances of opera’s best known arias and overtures including the Habanera from Carmen, Nessun Dorma from Turandot, and musical classics to sing along to from My Fair Lady and Annie Get your Gun. Opera for the People has a fantastic program that is sure to delight opera aficionados and novices alike.
Thanks to the generosity of Anthony Pratt – who is continuing his invaluable contribution to Australia’s cultural landscape by introducing new audiences to opera and classical music – this wonderful night of entertainment is totally free of charge, in an important effort to make the arts more accessible to Australians.
Spread out the picnic blanket and gather your friends. Gates open at 4.00pm, so arrive early to enjoy a program of family-friendly entertainment before the concert.
