Who is Amy Ingram?
I am an actor and a maker. I grew up in South Australia but am based in Brisbane (or wherever the jobs take me). I have been performing and making work for over 20 years and shift between theatre / film/ TV. I love being a part of work from inception onwards.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Once upon a time I thought I could have been a lawyer or an ambo, but I think I was just more interested in playing them on TV. LOL. In this world I get to be many different people with unique lives so I can’t ask for much more than that. Life is never boring. And that’s the way I like it.
Who inspires you and why?
My friends, my family, my colleagues – all tackling life’s obstacles with grace and humour. I think the quiet battle of a person just living their life is always filled with inspiring moments. My mother – Tracy is an excellent human who works in emergency youth housing and is a very good reminder when you think you are having a crappy day what other people are going through in the world.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Oh god, I mean I would love all the money to be able to help people – travel and experience more of the world, different ways of living and how my millions of dollars could make meaningful impact. But I also believe that artists do make a difference in the world everyday – maybe its just one mind at a time, a shift in beliefs, a spark of empathy – and all of those things can go a long way in creating change.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Anywhere with a beach, sunshine and a cocktail.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
If they are coming to Brisbane, I’d go to one of our excellent riverside restaurants with a view – a little City Cat river tour – swim in my rooftop pool – and then get out of dodge and head to Burleigh Heads.
What are you currently reading?
IT by Stephen King. I love horror. And I’m kinda a nerd.
What are you currently listening to?
Been listening to a bit of James Blake – he is coming to Australia for a concert in December and I’m ready for it. That and Lily Allen in preparation for her arrival.
Happiness is?
The small things that make up a life – laughing till you cry (or trying to hold in laughter when you aren’t allowed). A long hug. Beaches. Wine. Family. Friends. Always having a holiday planned. Always having artistic projects on the go. Not comparing your life to anyone else’s.
What does the future hold for you?
Honestly couldn’t tell you – hopefully just lots of the above.
Amy stars in the world premiere season of Strong is the New Pretty by Suzie Miller – which will be presented at the Playhouse – QPAC, as part of the 2026 Brisbane Festival, from 1 – 19 September, before playing the Canberra Theatre Centre (24 – 26 September), Geelong Arts Centre (8 – 11 October), and the Sydney Opera House (22 October – 5 December).
