Heartbreak is one of life’s most universal experiences, but Heartbreak Hotel explores it with striking originality. Created by Aotearoa New Zealand’s EBKM and written and performed by Karin McCracken, this inventive production blends humour, live music and science into an engaging and unexpectedly uplifting examination of love and loss.
At its centre is a woman trying to make sense of the end of a relationship. McCracken’s script moves beyond familiar post-breakup territory, weaving personal reflection with neuroscience and pop culture to reveal how deeply heartbreak affects both mind and body. The result is a work that feels intensely personal yet universally relatable.
McCracken delivers a compelling performance, balancing vulnerability with great comic timing. Her writing captures the irrational thoughts, awkward moments and emotional contradictions of heartbreak with warmth and honesty, finding humour without diminishing the pain.
Simon Leary is an equally engaging presence, slipping effortlessly between multiple roles while providing both comic support and emotional balance. The chemistry between the pair gives the production its warmth and keeps its more theatrical flourishes grounded.
Under Eleanor Bishop’s assured direction, the production moves seamlessly between intimate storytelling and surreal theatrical sequences, including an energetic detour through Berlin’s nightclub scene. These shifts mirror the emotional unpredictability of heartbreak, giving the work a playful theatricality.
Live music is woven naturally throughout, with breakup classics by Celine Dion, The Cranberries, Elvis Presley and Bonnie Raitt becoming emotional touchstones rather than nostalgic interludes.
Perhaps the production’s most distinctive feature is its exploration of the science of heartbreak. Insights into brain chemistry and the body’s response to grief are delivered with clarity and wit, adding genuine depth without ever feeling didactic.
Despite its title, Heartbreak Hotel is an immensely enjoyable evening. Frequently laugh-out-loud funny and underpinned by genuine empathy, it acknowledges the pain of heartbreak while celebrating resilience, connection and recovery.
Smart, funny and emotionally resonant, Heartbreak Hotel is a beautifully crafted piece of theatre that reminds us heartbreak may be inevitable, but so too is the capacity to heal.
