Who is Ash Youren?
My name is Ash Youren, I’m an acrobat with Gravity and other Myths (GOM), and before working for GOM I was working primarily with Canadian based companies. I’ve been doing circus since I was 11 years old and I work mostly as a base or porter, which is the person that stands at the bottom of all of the towers or shapes.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I think I have so many passions and hobbies outside of circus as a pastime, but it’s hard to imagine doing anything else than this as my fulltime career. I have a love of the outdoors and being physical, so something along those lines.
Who inspires you and why?
I have a lot of really great friends all around the world who inspire me to keep doing what I’m doing but to also have fun and remember why I’m living this life. My mates keep me humble and also encourage me more than anything else.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Probably just try to be a happy and positive person, even when it’s hard to do so. The world is a pretty large and complicated place, so the best I could do is to be a positive force for those close to me.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Anywhere country Australia, preferably camping and getting out into nature, away from the big cities.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Most likely the beach or some kind of hike. Anywhere that’s really beautiful.
What are you currently reading?
Currently it’s a book called Thinking, Fast and Slow. It’s a look into the psychology behind decision making and the statistical patterns of human behaviour.
What are you currently listening to?
Just a bunch of old soul music. Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke.
Happiness is?
Finding what you like to do with the people you like to be around. The right people make the difference.
What does the future hold for you?
Anything really. I’ll probably be a touring acrobat for a little while longer, and then hanging out in the Australian bush doesn’t sound too bad. Probably a lot of outdoor me.
