Based on DreamWorks’ hit animated film and adapted for a 90-strong young cast of up-and coming theatre stars, Madagascar JR plays the Cripps Centre in St Kilda East for a strictly limited season from 7 to 10 July 2026.

The show brings to life the beloved story of Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe and Gloria the Hippo as they escape New York’s Central Park Zoo. The four friends embark on an unforgettable journey in Madagascar, where they encounter mischievous penguins, the eccentric King Julien and his cheeky lemurs.

Full of big laughs, catchy dance numbers and non-stop energy, Madagascar JR is a celebration of friendship, adventure and finding your place in the world.

The production is directed by Stage School Australia Artistic Director Josh Mulcahy, who began his journey with the company as a student before going on to direct its productions. “I grew up on these stages, so having the opportunity to now direct more than 90 young performers in a show like this feels like a real full-circle moment,” said Mulcahy.

“Creating opportunities for young people to be creative, build confidence and express themselves through the arts is at the heart of everything we do at Stage School Australia – and it’s by far the most rewarding part of my role. Madagascar JR is fun, energetic and full of heart. This production will be a fantastic introduction to live theatre – especially for young audiences experiencing it for the very first time,” said Mulcahy.

The production features musical direction by five-time Green Room Award nominee Chelsea Plumley and choreography by Jacqui Green, who choreographed Stage School’s 2018 production of Madagascar Jr. With original music and lyrics by George Noriega and Joel Someillan, Madagascar JR is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International.

Stage School Australia Producer Corey Smark said the show will be the perfect way for families to round out the winter school holidays. “Our recent productions of Mary Poppins JR and Matilda the Musical JR were a huge hit with families, so we cannot wait to bring this much fun to the stage these holidays,” said Smark.

“We have brought together more than 90 talented young performers and watching them light up a full-scale production is what these shows are all about.”
