Whatever you may think of Michael Jackson’s private life, one undeniable fact remains, musically he was a genius. And it is this genius that is explored in MJ The Michael Jackson Musical.
Set during the rehearsal period for Michael Jackson’s 1992 Dangerous World Tour, the musical chronicles MJ’s preparation for what would become one of the biggest tours of his career.
Through a series of flashbacks, audiences are taken on a journey through his life, from his early days with the Jackson 5 through to his rise as a global superstar. Along the way, we gain insight into the experiences, triumphs and struggles that shaped the man behind the music.
At the heart of the production is Ilario Grant as MJ. Grant delivers a captivating performance, effortlessly recreating Jackson’s iconic dance moves while also capturing his vulnerability and perfectionism. His portrayal highlights both the extraordinary talent and the relentless pressure that drove Michael throughout his career.
The younger versions of Michael are equally impressive. Blaiyze Barksdale brings a bright, cheeky stage presence to young Michael, while Liam Damons portrayal of teenage Michael is filled with the enthusiasm, determination and ambition needed to succeed in the demanding world of show business.
At various moments throughout the production, both Grant and Damons delivered performances that genuinely brought goosebumps. Combined with Jackson’s music, their work managed to touch the soul.
One of the most moving moments of the evening is the duet between young Michael and his mother, Katherine, played by Oyoyo Joi. Their performance of I’ll Be There is heartfelt and emotional, with Joi showcasing a truly powerful set of vocals.
The production also explores Michael’s tumultuous relationship with his father, Joseph. J Daughtry takes on the dual roles of Joseph Jackson and Rob, the tour manager. The contrast between the two characters is striking, and Daughtry transitions effortlessly from the mean-spirited, demanding father to the caring and supportive manager. His performance as Rob is heartfelt and sincere, while his portrayal of Joseph is suitably callous and intimidating.
Sarah Morrison is excellent as Rachel, the fictional MTV journalist interviewing Michael as he prepares for the Dangerous World Tour. Rachel serves as a clever narrative device, helping to move the story forward while allowing audiences to explore MJ’s vulnerabilities and reflect on his extraordinary career.
Visually, MJ The Musical is spectacular. The sets and costumes are an explosion of colour, while the larger musical numbers reflect the grandeur and ambition that Jackson brought to his concerts. The scale of some scenes is genuinely mind blowing.
The choreography is exceptional, performed with precision, energy and passion. A standout moment is the Bob Fosse inspired sequence that seamlessly transitions into Smooth Criminal. It is simply phenomenal and demonstrates the extraordinary talent of the cast.
While the production largely succeeds in celebrating Jackson’s artistry, it takes time to unnecessarily address some of the more trivial rumours surrounding his life, such as his changing appearance and reports of sleeping in an oxygen tank. By raising these issues, the show risks reminding audiences of other controversies that it does not seek to explore. The production is at its strongest when it focuses on Jackson’s life, talent and creative genius.
Ultimately, MJ The Musical is a celebration of the music, artistry and magic that Michael Jackson created. It offers audiences a glimpse into the life of a musical genius while delivering spectacular performances, breathtaking choreography and unforgettable music.
It is an exhilarating theatrical experience that leaves audiences with a renewed appreciation for the remarkable legacy of Michael Jackson. If you only see one professional production a year, make it this one!
