As Melbourne settles into the depths of winter, one of the city’s most anticipated seasonal events is preparing to illuminate the night once again. Returning to the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne from 12 June to 2 August 2026, Lightscape promises another enchanting after-dark journey, transforming the beloved gardens into a glowing wonderland of colour, creativity and imagination.
Now firmly established as a winter tradition, the internationally acclaimed experience continues to evolve, offering visitors fresh reasons to return year after year. The 2026 edition introduces an impressive collection of new artists, installations and interactive elements, ensuring the 2.1-kilometre trail remains as captivating as ever for audiences of all ages.
This season will feature 15 new and returning installations created by leading artists from around the globe, including outstanding Australian and First Peoples creatives whose works add a distinctive local voice to the experience. Together, they weave a narrative of light, movement and sound that transforms familiar landscapes into extraordinary spectacles.

“Each year, it’s an absolute pleasure to be asked to light up this beautiful landscape, that is as stunning at night when the trees and buildings are awash with colour, as it is during the day bathed in winter sun.”
“This year we are looking forward to showcasing some incredible new work by local artists, alongside spectacular international artworks that have never been seen in Australia before,” said Bottrell.
Among the most anticipated additions is the Australian premiere of Bifröst, a breathtaking creation by French studio Pitaya. Inspired by the mythical rainbow bridge of Norse legend, the installation invites visitors to wander through a tunnel of 20 illuminated arches cascading with vibrant light.
Equally mesmerising is Firefly Field from acclaimed Dutch studio TOER, where 200 glowing points of light appear to dance and drift above the grass, creating the illusion of a living constellation hovering just above the earth, while Mycelium Network is a mesmerising fibre-optic installation featuring multiple colour-changing clusters of mushrooms spread across the ground.
The event also shines a spotlight on Melbourne’s thriving creative community through a series of newly commissioned works by local artists, adding a fresh layer of discovery to the trail. These contemporary creations sit comfortably alongside much-loved Lightscape favourites, striking a balance between innovation and tradition.
Returning crowd-pleasers include the majestic Winter Cathedral, whose soaring 30-metre canopy of light once again offers one of the trail’s most striking visual moments. The ever-popular Fire Garden also returns with a dramatic new design for 2026, reimagined as a circular spiral featuring 150 flickering candles that cast a warm and atmospheric glow across the landscape.
More than a light show, Lightscape has become a celebration of art, nature and community, encouraging visitors to experience the Royal Botanic Gardens in an entirely new way. As darkness falls and the gardens come alive with light, the event offers a welcome sense of wonder during Melbourne’s coldest months – an invitation to slow down, explore and be transported.
The event is now easier to access than ever before, located just moments from the new ANZAC Station. At the dedicated Welcome Zone visitors can pick up hot chocolate, mulled wine and a range of food options to enjoy as you wander along the glowing pathways. For the first time, those looking for some date-night inspiration can attend exclusive adults-only evenings which will be restricted to people aged over 18.
Lightscape is also committed to provide relaxed sessions for anyone who would benefit from a more supported environment, including people with autism, sensory sensitivities, learning disabilities, mobility challenges, anxiety or dementia.
Celebrated nationwide, Lightscape now holds two consecutive Gold wins at the Victorian Tourism Awards, cementing its place as one of Australia’s most sought-after winter experiences.
With new installations, international premieres and returning favourites lighting the path, Lightscape 2026 looks set to once again deliver one of the city’s most magical winter experiences.
