Who is Raphael Wong?
Husband-Dad-Musician-Theatre Maker-Educator. I’m a performer at heart – whether that’s through music, in the classroom, or being on stage. I grew up in Australia with a deep love for creativity, and over time I’ve shaped that into a career that lets me connect with audiences around the world, work with the next generation of artists, and be in a job that lets me express who I am.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Vocationally? I wanted to be a veterinarian when I was younger and play in the AFL! However, my love for music outweighed my love for my maths and science results. I still have a passion for the AFL, and my Sydney Swans, but Mum wasn’t too keen for me to play footy. I dream of one day walking the hallowed turf of the SCG, not as a player, but maybe a National Anthem singer and a future Swans Ambassador.
In terms of my career now? I think I’d take more risks earlier. There’s always that hesitation at the start – wondering if you’re ready, if it’s the right time. I’ve learned there’s no perfect moment, so if anything, I’d jump sooner and trust myself more.
Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by people who are unapologetically themselves. My wife, Tiffany, and son, Teddy. I love them wholeheartedly, and my one goal in life is to do just that.
I’m inspired by people who have broken the mold before them, aren’t held to their stereotypes and have risen above prejudice. Misty Copeland, Jeremy Lin, Dylan Alcott, Adam Goodes, Vidya Makan.
I’m inspired by artists who don’t chase trends but create from a place of honesty. It’s that authenticity that really resonates with me and pushes me to stay grounded in my own voice.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I’d use my platform to uplift others – especially young creatives who might not see themselves represented. If I can help someone feel seen, heard, or brave enough to pursue their passion, that’s a difference worth making.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Somewhere warm, near the ocean. There’s something about the water that resets everything for me – it’s calming, grounding, and gives me space to reflect and recharge. I once spent two weeks in Malta. We hired a car and basically picked a beach to sit on each day. Perfection.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Depends which town! These days I’m based in Sydney – so it’s off to the Eastern beaches (honestly, take your pick!). As cliché as it sounds, my favourite is probably Bondi because of how family friendly it is with the playground, children’s pool at the northern end and a bevy of food options along Campbell Parade. Bar Pho on Wairoa Ave is a gem! Then it’s a trip into the city. Circular Quay, The Rocks, Darling Harbour. Food, drinks, playgrounds, sights, music, theatre. Fill up to your hearts delight!
In my home town of Melbourne, I’d say start the day with a walk along Elwood Beach, a brunch and coffee at South of Johnston in Collingwood, followed by a quick walk down Clarendon St East Melbourne, and we’re off to watch a game of footy at the MCG, before hopping on the 70, 48 or 75 tram to the Regent Theatre to watch Opera Australia’s Encore! (Of course, if you’re coming to the matinée, I suggest flipping the last two!). End the night at Piccolina Gelateria on Degraves St.
Families will also love both the Melbourne and Taronga Zoo. Yearly memberships are highly recommended and gives you free unlimited access to all major zoos across Australia!
What are you currently reading?
I have so many books on the go at the moment. It’s not ideal, but I’m motivated to read by my mood and when I find a moment of time up my sleeve (which is not very often!). The Detective by Matthew Reilly; The Father Hood: Inspiration for the new dad generation by Andrew McUtchen, Jeremy Macvean, and Luke Benedictus; Unmasked: A memoir by Andrew Lloyd Webber; Gallipoli Sniper: The Remarkable Life of Billy Sing by John Hamilton; Opera Wars by Caitlin Vincent
What are you currently listening to?
A mix of everything, honestly. I tend to listen to podcasts and audiobooks more than music. I often find my brain actively listening and analysing the music rather than it helping me to switch off or focus. The Hamish and Andy Podcast and The Morning Shift are my go to podcasts. When I choose my music, it generally has to be purposeful and in a moment that I know I can enjoy it.
I’m a full album, start to finish kinda guy. Some days it’s cast albums, work related tracks; other days it’s artists that I know really well and enjoy across all genres (Queen, Thirsty Merc, Jason Mraz, Stephen Sondheim, Fort Minor, Michael Buble, just to name a few!). But honestly with a 5 year old in the house, it’s largely Bluey, The Wiggles, Playschool and Gabby’s Dollhouse!
Happiness is?
Happiness is now – when what I’m doing, who I’m with, and how I feel are all in balance, it’s hard not to acknowledge how grateful I am for the present. It’s not constant, and it’s bloody hard work, but those moments are a blessing. It’s usually on days I’m spending with my family, sometimes before I head to the theatre for work, or when I’ve got time in between contracts to rest and take stock of my family’s and my wellbeing.
What does the future hold for you?
This is where I tell you my deepest desires, right? To be the first Phantom of South East Asian descent to perform on an Australian stage, Broadway, the West End and beyond. To be the first Javert of South East Asian descent in its 40+ year history. The list of roles goes on.
I want to record an album, I have my own solo show – This is the Moment that I’d like to do more performances of. I have an idea for a yet to be written musical! I’m music directing a youth production in Sydney. More growth as an artist, a parent, a husband and a human. I don’t have it all mapped out, but I believe in manifestation and I’m excited for wherever the journey takes me.
Raphael stars in Opera Australia’s Encore! Songs from the Musicals – which will be presented at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre from 28 – 30 May 2026. For more information, visit: www.opera.org.au for details.
