Who is Dean Newcomb?
My name is Dean, and I am the principal clarinettist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. Growing up on the Gold Coast in Queensland as the youngest of four children, I was surrounded by music from an early age. While my mother first taught me piano, it was my older siblings’ inspiration that encouraged me to continue learning and pursue music myself.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
If I weren’t a musician, I would likely be working in motorsport, either as a mechanic or a driver. Motorsport has always been a passion for me alongside my music career. Over the past 15 years, I have competed in drifting and other forms of precision driving, and I can easily imagine becoming more involved in instruction or stunt driving.
Who inspires you and why?
I find daily inspiration in my two young children, Frederik (4) and Lise (2). They encourage me to see the world with fresh eyes and challenge me as I help guide them through this early stage of life.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I would encourage more people to learn music because it offers a unique perspective on inner focus, control, patience, expression, emotion, communication and connection. When I approach everyday life the way I do music, I find myself calmer and more focused.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Skiing in Italy on my honeymoon was unforgettable. While skiing can sometimes be challenging, it’s truly magical when everything falls into place. I look forward to when our kids are old enough to try it – I think they will find both the experience and the views awe-inspiring.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Wine tasting in Adelaide is a rite of passage, even though I personally don’t drink much wine. I would gladly be the designated driver, showing off the McLaren Vale region and ending the day with a pub meal by the beach as the sun sets over the water.
What are you currently reading?
At the moment, we are enjoying Laugh in the Bath. My children usually choose the books, but I try to guide them toward those with rhythmic or rhyming sentences since they’re more enjoyable for all of us.
What are you currently listening to?
Lately, I’ve been preparing for the premiere of a clarinet concerto written just for me, and I’m focused on analysing my part. I’ve recorded myself playing it more than 20 times, listening back to find areas for improvement. When I need a break, I turn to music that is unrelated to classical music, mostly Neo-Soul.
Happiness is?
Happiness is when my children learn something for the first time and can’t wait to show me, as though I haven’t discovered it yet!
What does the future hold for you?
We are currently undertaking major home renovations, and I plan to be involved as both project manager and assistant. The challenge will be balancing this with my full-time orchestral work, full-time parenthood, and maybe some driving on the side if I find a quiet weekend.
Dean is the Principal Clarinettist with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra – who will present Concerto del Motore, a new concerto by Joe Chindamo, as part of the Symphony Series In The Quiet, at the Adelaide Town Hall on 17 & 18 April 2026. For more information, visit: www.aso.com.au for details.
