Who is Daniel Belle?
I’m a Sydney-based singer and actor. I’ve sung for longer than I can remember. I’ve had the opportunity to perform around the world in concerts and musicals and over the past few years I’ve taught voice at the Sydney Conservatorium’s Musical Theatre course. I love the creative process and getting to collaborate with other artists in pursuing that.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
In another life I think I would have been a racing driver. It seems miles away from music but both require precision and the ability to perform under pressure. That being said, I’m a little less likely to end up in hospital on stage.
Who inspires you and why?
Lately, I’d have to say Sam Harris. As a neuroscientist and philosopher, he’s done a great deal to bridge the worlds of science and philosophy, and I really value that. I’m inspired by people who can engage deeply with complex ideas while still making them accessible and relevant.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I don’t think I’m all that different from anyone else these days – the problems in the world can feel endless. So, I try to focus on being kind day to day and helping where I can. I find teaching can make a huge difference in a student’s life. I still remember and cherish all the good ones I was lucky enough to have and am keen to pass that on.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
It’s hard to pick just one, but if you can show me a place with a roller coaster, I’ll be waiting in line to ride it. That said, anything remotely scenic in New Zealand is hard to beat. Add the Lord of the Rings soundtrack and it’s a slice of heaven.
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’d take them to watch Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour’s production of The Phantom of the Opera of course! I recently took a friend to the new Sydney Fish Markets when they visited, and it was a great spot to show off a bit of the city, but I don’t think you can really beat the Harbour or beaches here. I lived here my whole life, and it still takes my breath away.
What are you currently reading?
I’m currently reading Songwriters on Songwriting by Paul Zollo. I love hearing artists speak about their process, and he has some great interviews with Brian Wilson, Jimmy Webb and Leonard Cohen. I highly recommend it.
What are you currently listening to?
I listen to all sorts of music, but lately I’ve been enjoying The Midnight after a friend put me onto them. I’ve also been listening to podcasts, particularly the Noiser series on D-Day and the Titanic.
Happiness is?
Creating, laughing, and napping.
What does the future hold for you?
I’ll be playing the role of Piangi in Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour’s production of The Phantom of the Opera for the next couple of months which is already shaping up to be extravagant and majestic.
Daniel stars as Ubaldo Piangi in Opera Australia’s production of The Phantom of the Opera – which will be presented as part of Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour at Mrs Macquaries Point (Sydney) from 27 March – 3 May 2026. For more information, visit: www.opera.org.au for details.
