Who is Luke Stoker?
I’m an opera singer and a dad to two beautiful boys. I live in Düsseldorf, Germany, where I’m a member of the soloist ensemble at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. I’ve moved from Australia to Germany in 2013 and have been working throughout Europe since then.
I’m singing in Australia this year for the first time since I moved to Europe, which is very exciting! I’m making my Victorian Opera debut in Mozart’s Abduction (The Abduction from the Seraglio) from 12 – 16 August at the Palais Theatre.
What would you do differently from what you do now?
I always wanted to be a vet so I could imagine doing something with animals.
Who inspires you and why?
My brother and sister inspire me because I see the love and dedication they have for their families. They inspire me to show up for my kids in the same way, to cherish every moment I have with them.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I am starting to teach because I believe it is important to give back to future generations. Music is an essential part of education and I hope to help young people discover their love for music.
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Australia, because I miss the country and the people, having been in Europe now for so long. I don’t get to return very often so I always cherish my time here. I’d like to explore the parts of the country that I haven’t yet seen!
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
In Düsseldorf, I would take them to a Brauhaus to have a good German meal, then walk along the Rhine river. If it’s the right time of year, the Christmas markets are a must for their magical atmosphere.
What are you currently reading?
I’m currently reading Tim by Colleen McCullough, which is based in 1970s Sydney. It’s nice to read the descriptions of Sydney in this time.
What are you currently listening to?
I have a very eclectic taste in music, so I tend to listen to many different artists and genres all the time. One of my favourite artists at the moment is Gregory Porter because he is such a genuine performer and storyteller.
Happiness is?
A good coffee with good friends and conversation.
What does the future hold for you?
Who knows! I hope whatever it holds, I will be surrounded by family, friends and lots of laughter!
