On the Couch with Olivia Carniato

Olivia Carniato AAR On the CouchWho is Olivia Carniato?
My name’s Olivia Carniato and I’ve been professionally dramatic since birth. I’m powered by caffeine and the 1981 Liza Minnelli: Live at Carnegie Hall album.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Spend less money on cappuccino’s.

Who inspires you and why?
I’ve always been drawn to the great Golden Age – women such as Vera-Ellen, Cyd Charisse, Judy Garland and (insert basically every MGM musical star here). Iconic triple threats such Rita Moreno and Gene Kelly hypnotised me, they still do. Their ability to tell a story through their bodies and transport you to another universe is pure magic.

I’ve also been lucky to be surrounded by a community of incredibly talented artists, close friends, and my partner. Everywhere I look, I see people striving to grow both on and off stage, and that energy is a huge driving force in how I move through the world of theatre.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I’d create a world where artists are paid properly. And oat milk is free.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
New York City. Always. I’m a theatre kid through and through. All I want to do is see the new shows, hear the new cast albums, and be surrounded by the hum of a city that lives and breathes performance.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’ll drag them to my current favourite restaurant, order half the menu, sample all the cocktails and then have everyone over to my apartment to drink wine on the floor.

What are you currently reading?
I just finished The Third Gilmore Girl: A Memoir by Kelly Bishop. She originated Sheila in A Chorus Line on Broadway – and let me tell you, I could not put it down.

What are you currently listening to?
My harmonies for Cats.

Happiness is?
On the couch with my partner Keanu, watching Below Deck while eating Messina and pretending I’d be great at docking a 122 foot yacht.

What does the future hold for you?
I honestly couldn’t say – but I know it’s going to be bigger than I’ve ever imagined. It already has been. I hope I am on the stage for the rest of my life, that’s home for me.
