There’s a certain magic that happens when an artist lets you peer behind the curtain – not just into their creative process, but into their soul. In Pensive Like the Fox, Mike McLeish does exactly that, with plenty of charm, candour and a delightful streak of self-deprecating wit.
Its been nearly 20 years since McLeish gained much attention for his legendary portrayal of Paul Keating in Casey Bennetto’s Keating! The Musical. Since that time, he has garnered an impressive resume of credits including Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, David Bowie’s Lazarus, Georgy Girl – The Seekers Musical, Miracle City, Mustangs FC, Offspring, Spontaneous Broadway, Utopia and Wentworth.
In Pensive Like the Fox, McLeish proves why he’s one of Australia’s most compelling storytellers. In the space of an hour, topics covered include various takes on ‘curtain-call’ delivery, reflecting on life as one approaches 50, the mating habits of foxes, the dreaded feeling of being followed by a black Ford Ranger Raptor on Punt Road, and an unforgettable riff on the social semiotics of pubic hair.
This one-man show is a deft, disarming blend of storytelling, satire and song – self-aware without the self-indulgence. Finn McLeish’s direction is smart, subtle and confident. She knows exactly when to rein in her dad’s showmanship and when to let him fly.
Dancing between wry stand-up, philosophical meanderings and well timed musical interludes, every note sung and every silence held feels intentional, generous and rich with emotion.
Whether you’ve followed Mike McLeish from his musical theatre triumphs or are discovering him for the first time, Pensive Like the Fox is well-worth a visit this Comedy Festival!
