Who is Mahalia Barnes?
I’m a mother, a singer, a manager, a songwriter, and I’m playing Mary in Jesus Christ Superstar!
What would you do differently from what you do now?
Nothing – I’m incredibly grateful for the life I live, the work, the support and love I have around me… I wouldn’t change it.
Who inspires you and why?
I am inspired by so many people. My friends and family, especially my incredible parents and my husband and two daughters. I am inspired by my Dad for his dedication and work ethic, his commitment to being the best he can be, his fearlessness, his tenacity and strength and by his honesty.
My mother is a force of nature, she is so incredible, brave, intelligent, warm and nurturing, strong. My husband is, much like my Dad so committed to being his best, open to learning and growing… he’s so loving and dedicated to our girls and to me. And he’s one of the most talented musicians I have ever known! He’s amazing. And my girls, Ruby and Rosie…they just inspire me to be better and do more to leave this world a better place.
What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I try every day to make a difference to the world in any way I can – through acts of love, through listening and learning. I try to make conscious choices to reduce waste, recycle, reuse… we have to do what we can for the planet!
Favourite holiday destination and why?
Thailand – my mother is from Thailand and I have been going there since I was a baby and it just feels like a second home. I love the people and the food, and the weather!
When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
My life usually revolves around food, so its usually restaurants to be honest… but in Sydney we have the most beautiful harbour and beaches so it is good to take visitors to see the sights!
What are you currently listening to?
I always listen to soul and blues and rock and roll… and a little RnB/Hip Hop in the mix. I can never get enough of Aretha Franklin. She’s the queen, but I just love music that makes me feel something!
Happiness is?
Family, friends, music and food.
What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully more of the above – family time, friends, music and food! I am working on some new music that I will get into the studio to record at some point… but for the next while, I’ll be on Jesus Christ Superstar stages around the country! I’m really excited for it!
