On the Couch with Laura Marzadori

Ciao, I am Laura Marzadori, the first violinist concertmaster from Milan’s La Scala and I am about to embark on my first Australian tour with concerts in Perth, Brisbane and Sydney.

What would you do differently from what you do now?
Probably, if I hadn’t become a musician, I would have studied either law or criminology – I’m very passionate about the subject! In fact, I also have a strong passion for fashion, so I don’t rule out that I could have done something related to that. However, it’s hard for me to imagine doing anything other than music because, from the start, playing has felt so natural to me, and I’ve always felt that it would be my path.

Who inspires you and why?
There isn’t one person in particular who inspires me in life, but rather the different experiences I live every day. The places I visit, the conductors I work with, even the young musicians I teach. I think every beautiful thing we see, and experience is a source of inspiration.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I have always believed that making a difference means showing the world your uniqueness, without trying to conform at all costs, because that flattens our lives. I’ve always tried to stay true to myself as both a musician and a person, and I think that has made a difference in my journey and career.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
My favourite vacation spot is my home in the north of Sardinia. I’m very attached to this land, which I find magical, both for its crystal-clear sea and its wild nature!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I live in a small town on the outskirts of Milan, and when friends come to visit, our favourite activities are in nature, outdoors: bike rides or long walks in the Ticino Park.

What are you currently reading?
At the moment, I’m reading my first book by the Japanese author Murakami. I’ve decided to delve into this author, and so far, I really like it. The book I’m reading is After Dark.

What are you currently listening to?
I’ve always listened to all kinds of music, from classical (of course) to pop, rock, and I also really love blues and great singers from the past like Elvis Presley or Whitney Houston

Happiness is?
In my opinion, happiness is something you shouldn’t obsessively seek out, because if you do, it will be harder to find. I certainly find it in music, but also in the small things that happen to me every day. I think happiness consists of moments, and as such, they have a beginning, an end, and ups and downs. So, we should appreciate it when it’s there.

What does the future hold for you?
I don’t know what the future holds for me, but what I’ve always desired is to improve as a person and as an artist, and to continuously find more balance in my life.

Laura will make her Australian debut at the Vivaldi Gala Night: Journey to Italy at the University of Western Australia’s Winthrop Hall on Friday 27 September 2024. For more information, visit: www.ticketswa.com for details.
