A haunting exploration of the difference between merely surviving and truly living, Gavin Roach presents the Australian premiere of Vespertilio by Barry McStay at the Meat Market Stables, from 31 January – 10 February, as part of the 2024 Midsumma Festival.
Alan is on the hunt to find the last greater mouse-eared bat living in Britain, but a tender romance with Josh, the charming young runaway he meets in an abandoned railway tunnel, begins to divert him from his mission. As their relationship develops, these two damaged men might fix one another. If only a little.
Directed by Gavin Roach and featuring Alec Gilbert and Ozzy Breen-Carr, they bring this story of love, loneliness and bats to the stage with Vespertilio.
Barry McStay is an Irish writer and actor based in London. His plays include Our Island, Bir Tawil, The First and Come On You Boys In Green. He has created interactive theatre games for Gideon Reeling and written short plays for Miniaturists and the Abbey Theatre.
“McStay has crafted an ingenious and deeply moving storyline of two people who, like the bat, have family somewhere, from whom they have become detached.” – Broadway Baby
