You Got Older

After facing a few personal crises of her own, Mae finds herself returning home to help take care of her father and maybe even (a little) herself. You Got Older is a tender and darkly comic new play about family, illness, and cowboys – and how to remain standing when everything you know comes crashing down around you.

Clare Barron has quickly established herself as one of the rising stars of contemporary playwriting. You Got Older received its world premiere with Page 73 and has most recently played as part of Steppenwolf’s 2018 program. This play has received multiple awards including the Obie Award for Playwriting, Drama Desk Nomination for Outstanding Play, Kilroy’s List, and was a Susan Smith Blackburn finalist.

This will be director Claudia Barrie’s third time working in the Kings Cross Theatre following Dennis Kelly’s DNA earlier this year and the ground-breaking smash hit of 2017, Dry Land – which received five Sydney Theatre Award nominations including Best Production.

Barrie reunites with Sarah Meacham (Winner, Best Female Actor in an Independent Production – Dry Land) along with a stellar cast and design team. Barrie has recently been hailed by numerous critics as the director to watch in the Sydney theatre scene and this production is sure to live up to expectations.

Meacham is joined by a stellar cast including Alex Beauman (DNA, The Whale), Harriet Gordon-Anderson (Kindertransport, Picnic at Hanging Rock), Ainslie McGlynn (Doctor, Doctor, Felony), Gareth Rickards (Secret City, Wonderland), Steve Rodgers (Power Plays, Jasper Jones) and Cody Ross (Friday on my Mind, The Van De Maar Papers).

“This terrific new play offers a hilarious and painfully affecting blend of oddball dialogue, beautifully observed family dynamics, and a preoccupation with the weird ways of the body… Barron’s special genius lies in the deep dividends she derives from small talk.” – The New Yorker
