Yaron Lifschitz to lead GC2018 arts and cultural program

Circa Yaron Lifschitz A Queensland-based artistic director who transformed a local circus company into a world renowned performing arts success story has been named the Creative Lead for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games arts and cultural program.

Yaron Lifschitz, whose work has been seen by more than 500,000 people in 33 countries, will drive the vision for celebrations that will inspire and delight communities around Queensland in the lead-up to and during GC2018.

Minister for the Commonwealth Games, The Honourable Kate Jones said Mr Lifschitz is a proud Queenslander who has made his mark on the world stage as CEO and Artistic Director of Brisbane based company Circa.

“Here in Australia he has won four Helpmann Awards and he has been applauded and awarded internationally where his work has been reviewed as “astounding” and “extraordinarily moving” by critics in the UK and the United States,” said Minister Jones.

“Mr Lifschitz has a proven track record in pioneering social engagement and educational programs and creating innovative and inclusive works for broad audiences, including the indigenous community, at-risk young people, early childhood participants and people who experience a disability.”

The arts and cultural program for GC2018 will be a celebration for all Queenslanders and an opportunity to leave a lasting Games legacy for the Gold Coast and Queensland.

“The Commonwealth Games is a wonderful opportunity for us to harness creative potential and local talent from around Queensland to promote the growth of arts and culture on the Gold Coast and stimulate active, creative communities across the state. I look forward to seeing Yaron’s vision for the GC2018 arts and cultural program,” said Minister Jones.

City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said Mr Lifschitz’s appointment was another significant pillar in building the cultural future of the city. “We’re already making significant progress with the development of our Culture Strategy 2023, our plans for the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct, and our appointment of Robyn Archer AO as the City’s Strategic Advisor for arts and culture,” said Mr Tate.

“Appointing Yaron, who already has close creative ties to the Gold Coast through Bleach Festival, The Arts Centre and Mayor’s Arts and Cultural Advisory Group, is another piece of the creative jigsaw and I look forward to him working with our great local talent to put the Gold Coast centre stage in 2018.”

Complementing other Games highlights such as the Opening and Closing ceremonies, Mr Lifschitz said this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to play a role in transforming the cultural life of the Gold Coast forever.

“I am thrilled to be able to dream big, consult widely and help produce a program as fresh, innovative and dynamic as Queensland,” said Mr Lifschitz.
