With only days until Opening Night, the years of planning to bring the first Broadway musical to the now famous over the water stage are paying off with tickets to the show selling fast, and many performances close to being sold out.

Figures show that more people have bought tickets for this new production of West Side Story at this point than any previous Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour event, including 2015’s spectacular Aida, which currently holds the box office record of 55,000 tickets for the whole the season.

With the killer combination of world-class talent, an iconic harbourside setting, and a brand new production of the most legendary Broadway musical of all time, West Side Story on Sydney Harbour has seen the strongest uptake at the box office to date.

Opera Australia’s Artistic Director Lyndon Terracini is delighted with the strong audience response. “West Side Story is one of my favourite pieces, and I’m incredibly excited that we can present it as a new production on the harbour stage this year. We are thrilled that audiences are sharing in the enthusiasm – it will be like nothing they’ve seen before,” said Mr Terracini.

Now in its eighth year, the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour series is internationally renowned and recognised as a highlight of the Australian cultural calendar, drawing visitors from around Australian and from overseas.

West Side Story on Sydney Harbour runs 26 performances across an exclusive 4 week season from 22 March – 21 April 2019. For more information, visit: www.opera.org.au for details.
