Inspired by true tales of body horror and the prom scene from Carrie – Unrule is a spooky-scary and comedic premiere that teases apart our complicated relationships with female bodies at The Blue Room Theatre, Perth from 28 May 2019.
Emerging theatre-maker Michelle Aitken (Future’s Eve) and an ace ensemble of collaborators grapple deep seated anxieties around sexual, mental, and reproductive health with humour, rage and raw vulnerability.
“Unrule started for me out of my own experiences. After having trouble with the contraceptive pill for some time I decided to stop taking it and began experiencing weird side effects. Every time I consulted a doctor, I felt patronised,” says Aitken.
“When retelling this experience to friends I’m always met with giggles, gasps of horror, and a feeling or solidarity. Unrule is born out of my desire to make performance that discusses topical issues about women’s health, but also creates a sense of sisterhood and support and fascination.”
From light bladder leakage to serious accounts of medical mistreatment, be the first to strap into this cabaret meets surreal spectacle that can turn from hilarious to horrifying on a dime. It’s gross, it’s true, and it’s unlike anything you’ve seen before.
Michelle Aitken is an emerging theatre-maker and performer with a BA in dance from WAAPA. She makes her own work under the banner of Hey! Precious, as well as collaborating with various companies across the Perth. Recently Michelle performed as a motherfcuker in pvi collective’s deviator (MANPAC).
In 2019, she was AV designer for Squid Vicious Theatre’s Poorly Drawn Shark. Michelle has worked with Renegade Productions on works such as Medusa and Unveiling: Gay Sex for Endtimes – both at The Blue Room Theatre. In 2018, her award-winning solo show Future’s Eve toured to Auckland, Melbourne, and Sydney.
