The Young Tycoons

The Young Tycoons_Frank FarrugiaCJ Johnson’s The Young Tycoons is a wickedly subversive comedy that takes a scathing and satirical look at the ruthless world of Australia’s empire builders.

A smash hit for Darlinghurst Theatre Company in 2005 and 2006, this new version, created especially for the Eternity Playhouse stage, promises to be every bit as scandalous and uproariously funny.

Michael Pigott is excited to revisit this work, having directed both sell out shows almost a decade ago. “Still as edgy and incisive as ever, this contemporary piece has been reworked to bring it right up to today. With reimagined staging and design, a new cast and a different ending, audiences can expect the unexpected.”

When Australia’s two largest media barons hand over power to their sons, fortunes are risked, secrets are exposed, unspeakable acts are performed and lives are ruined. Kim and Trevor are two young men each handed the keys to mighty media empires. They leap into a major takeover together, but Kim goes in for ten times the level of investment. When the share price starts plummeting, the results include ridicule, outrage – and death.

Darlinghurst Theatre Company Director Glenn Terry has long-admired the work of CJ Johnson. “He is a writer who taps into our desires and creates a seductive world that we secretly aspire to. The Young Tycoons is about power and extreme wealth and Johnson lures us in and presents its darker side.”
