The Fourth Annual Mama Alto Christmas Special

Mama Alto by Trent PaceNow in its fourth year, the Mama Alto Christmas Special is a beloved holiday tradition, that has become an annual event at The Butterfly Club for 4 special performances from 10 December 2015.

Presided over by one of Melbourne’s most prolific cabaret divas, the sublime Mama Alto – recently returned from a triumphant international tour performing in Cuba with burlesque legends Finucane & Smith – and musically directed by Miss Chief, the Christmas cabaret extravaganza features a veritable constellation of special guest stars including: The Candy Topps, Michael Dalton, Dirk Hoult, Phillip Lee Curtis, Adrian Li Donni and Jamie Burgess, just to name a few!

“We started four years ago at the original South Melbourne Butterfly Club with a few of our closest friends from the worlds of cabaret, burlesque, opera and music theatre,” reflects Mama Alto, “with the aim of bringing camp holiday cheer to an otherwise stressful and isolating time of year for many.

“And people really responded. I never guessed we would start a tradition that our collaborating artists and our audiences would love and come back to year after year – and it just keeps growing! There’s certainly a value to the camp and kitsch spirit which a queer cabaret perspective brings to the silly season.”

“For many people, Christmas is tough. For whatever reason, it’s not a time of family or joy. Cabaret is a natural home for outcasts, and by reveling in the ridiculous, camp, queer side of Christmas – through vintage holiday songs, through laughter, and through celebrating the found families and communities we create for ourselves, we hope to bring a bit of fabulousness back to the tail end of the year. Who doesn’t love a bit of glitter on their tail end!” adds Mama Alto.
