The Fairytale Live of Russian Girls

The Fairytale Live of Russian Girls - photo by Sarah SteinerWith Meg Miroshnik’s opulent, post-Soviet Moscow play, The Fairytale Live of Russian Girls, Melbourne’s Boutique Theatre once again offer up an Australian premiere season that promises something unique and thrilling for theatre lovers at St Martins Youth Arts Centre for a limited season from 19 May 2017.

The tale centres around our hero, Annie. Sent by her mother back to her native Russia to brush up on the language and lose her American accent, she discovers an enchanted motherland – teeming with evil stepmothers, wicked witches, and ravenous bears.

While staying with an old family friend, Annie meets Masha and Katya – two glamorous Moscovians who introduce her to a world of magic, mystery, and vodka. When Masha disappears, Annie and Katya set out to save her and here Annie must learn how to become the heroine of a story more mysterious and treacherous than any childhood fable; her own. She quickly learns that not every fairytale has a happy ending.

“Being Russian doesn’t just allow me to torment the cast with the correct pronunciations, but gives this production a very authentic flavour,” says Director Elizabeth Millington. “The play captures the juxtaposition of Russia very well. There’s the world’s stereotypical idea of Russia full of dancing bears, vodka and corruption, and then there is the real Russia – full of history, pride, and elegance.”

Now well established in the Melbourne Independent Arts landscape, Boutique Theatre creates work that is inventive, relevant, and disruptive. The company launched in 2012 and has since gone on to produce nine international and Australian works, whilst developing a Writer’s Program and housing an ensemble of Creatives. This latest premiere offering is one not to be missed!
