Spike Heels

Spike Heels_editorialExploding with razor sharp comedy and packed with sexy drama, Q44 Theatre Company presents Theresa Rebeck’s Spike Heels at Chapel Off Chapel until 14 September.

A contemporary take on the Pygmalion classic, Spike Heels is Theresa Rebeck at her best, analysing the power play between sexes, while exploring the issues of sexual harassment, the control and use of women, ruthless ambition and the changing expectations of men in a feminist era.

At the centre of the play is tough, street-smart secretary, Georgie from the Bronx who is willing to do whatever she needs in order to get what she wants. Ultimately, the choices she makes force Georgie to question what she truly wants out of life.

Alongside Georgie are three equally as challenging characters who must each face the consequences of their own decisions. There is Andrew, the University Professor, Criminal Defence Lawyer Edward and, finally, Lydia – the rich, well-bred future wife of Andrew and ex-fiancé of Edward. Each character’s personalities reflect the effects of class and gender within society.

Theresa Rebeck is an award-winning American playwright, television writer, and novelist. Her work has appeared on the Broadway and Off-Broadway stage, in film, and on television. Her plays include Seminar, Mauritius, The Scene, The Water’s Edge, Loose Knit, The Family of Mann, View of the Dome, Bad DatesThe Butterfly Collection, Poor Behavior, Omnium Gatherum and Our House.

Her television credits include Dream On, Brooklyn Bridge, L.A. Law, American Dreamer, Maximum Bob, First Wave, Third Watch, and she created the NBC drama Smash. As a novelist, she has written Three Girls and Their Brother and Twelve Rooms With A View, and was the author of Free Fire Zone, a book of comedic essays about writing and show business.

“Places a superior wryly pleasing…fashionable feminist spin on sexual shenanigans. Neatly written with smart funny lines.” – New York Post
