Sexercise – The Musical

Sexercise cast editorialFresh, fun and fabulously flirty, Sexercise – The Musical will make its world premiere at Melbourne’s newest live performance venue Alex Theatre, St Kilda on 24th February 2015.

Joe & Sam (married, but not connecting), Tania (heartbroken), Andy (married the wrong girl) , Rhonda (looking for Mr Right online) and Shane (36 still dating 23 year olds) all have their issues – busy lives love, lust, relationships, and Sexercise could be the answer.

The story is placed in the fast-paced world of married, professional, mid-30s couple Joe (Lyall Brooks) and Sam (Nicole Melloy). There’s no place for seduction amid the juggling of school runs, work schedules and their personal exercise regimes.

Like so many things that are stretched to a breaking point, Joe and Sam are failing to deliver to each other what they used to give away so freely – time, affection, spontaneity and, of course, sex.

Well-meaning friends Tania (Lulu McClatchy), Shane (Kristin Holland) and Andy (Cameron MacDonald) try to help Joe and Sam work through their problems. But, their friends have problems of their own. When Shane was 16 he picked up 23 years olds. At 36 he’s still doing it… just!

Tania believes in ‘the one’ – trouble is, she met her and then, got dumped. At least she still has her cats! Poor Andy married ‘the one’ – just the wrong one! And there’s Rhonda (Fem Belling) running the gamut of online dating sites, trying everything on the menu and struggling to decide what to order on a regular basis.

Directed by Sara Grenfell and choreography by Dana Jolly, the stage band is led by musical director Trevor Jones, setting the pace with a lively, rocking score of tunes.

Sexercise – The Musical is the first performance to be staged in the new Alex Theatre, one of three theatres to be built in the former George Cinema complex in Fitzroy St, St Kilda

It is fitting Sexercise – The Musical is to be the new Alex Theatre’s first show: Aleksander Vass wrote a popular cartoon book on the subject several years ago. Producer Malcolm Cooke was inspired by the title, and he commissioned writer and composer Derek Rowe to create a new musical creating a story and characters based on the subject.

“I invited Alex to co-produce Sexercise – The Musical with me and he not only agreed but built a new theatre in which to properly launch it,” said Malcolm Cooke said. “Alex recognised the need for smaller theatres to create and launch original new works for the commercial theatre, and thanks to him Melbourne will now have the perfect ‘Off Broadway’ theatre complex in The Alex Theatre.”
