After channeling jazz icon Billie Holiday for the acclaimed season of Neil Cole’s An Audience with Billie Holiday at Chapel off Chapel earlier this year, Mama Alto returns to The Butterfly Club to perform the songs of another legendary singer, Sarah Vaughan.
“For me, growing up in Australia as a person of colour and as a genderqueer person, the formidably talented and glamorous black women who sang American jazz were inspirational beacons in a confusing world,” explains Mama Alto.
Foremost amongst these singers were women such as Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and of course, Sarah Vaughan. “To my ear, Sarah Vaughan is one of the greatest singers of all time. Her interpretation of lyrics and communication of meaning, combined with her sumptuously rich vocal timbre, transformed songs into a rich tapestry of human experience.”
Mama Alto is thrilled to work once more with collaborator Tiffanni Walton as musical director and pianist, as well as to return to the show room of Melbourne’s, The Butterfly Club.
