On the Couch with Sharon Millerchip

Sharon Millerchip AAR On The CouchWho is Sharon Millerchip?
Sharon Millerchip is the mother of two great kids Ellie 16 and Ferg 11, is the wife of restaurateur Andy, is the eldest of three siblings, is a graduate of the prestigious Johnny Young Talent School, is an actor, a song n dance gal and sometime director, is a surprisingly good rollerblader, is an improving cook and blue cheese lover. She thinks she might just be hitting her stride, but she’s often wrong about stuff.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Hmm good question. I’ve never really done anything else but I’m pretty keen to explore that. I landed a job in Cats while I was waiting for my HSC results and I’ve been in this great lane ever since. I’m pretty obsessed with modern history so perhaps that would have rung my academic bells.

Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by people who get out there and DO IT. People who back themselves, who are unencumbered by the expectations of others or the fear of failure. Sounds simple… but they’re rare.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
This is possibly a better answer to the above question but – a friend of mine has recently walked away from her high level tech job to work for Greenpeace, my beautiful friend Rachael Beck has created a company to encourage performing arts and the self esteem of our school kids. I’m inspired by their example and I intend to play my part. I also hope that in a million small ways I am raising children who will honour this planet and continue to make wiser environmental and social choices for their future.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I’ll never forget the stunning trip to Spain, Portugal, Italy and France with Andy years ago, but last year’s trip to Tasmania with the family probably still trumps it. We hiked, we climbed, we feasted physically, spiritually, mentally. I love that place! Aching to go back.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I live right on Bondi Beach so the coastal walk to Coogee is an instant winner. I love ferry rides and am surprised and delighted by Sydney’s beauty every single time.

What are you currently reading?
I’m generally a nonfiction reader. I love autobiographies and I’m currently reading Lee Grant’s – I Said Yes To Everything which is sensational! I’m also revisiting Magda Szubanski’s – The Reckoning which of course I adored.

What are you currently listening to?
Perhaps surprisingly, I very rarely listen to musical theatre unless I have to learn it, but Hamilton is a genuine obsession. I get stuck listening to commercial radio when my kids are in the car (shoot me now) but I do currently love Amy Shark and Vance Joy. I also often enjoy Smooth Fm but don’t tell anyone.

Happiness is?
Danish Blue cheese on a slice of green apple.

What does the future hold for you?
I guess the worst and the very best thing about being in this industry is that you never know what is around the corner. I do know I open this play in a few days which is scary, but like Shirley Valentine I’m up for the adventure. What I also know for sure is that I’m a lucky girl, I’m loved and I’ve got plenty of fuel in the tank. Bring it X
