On the Couch with Rob Mills

Rob Mills AAR On the CouchWho is Rob Mills?
A nearly 36 year old man. The youngest of three boys. An adoring uncle to 4 adorable youngsters. A pub singer from the sheltered south eastern suburbs of Melbourne turned leading musical theatre guy and now tv and stage actor and host…

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I would tell 17 year old Rob Mills that he should definitely keep going with drama in year 12 (I dropped out because I was afraid of what people might think of me). And I would probably choose some songs that really resonated with me during Australian Idol… You can can’t go wrong when you are your most honest and vulnerable.

Who inspires you and why?
Anyone who is living their desired life. It doesn’t matter in which field they work… My brothers for their commitment to both their families and work. Ira Glass (This American Life) for bringing real stories to life.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
If I had the money, brains trust and authority… I would try and end poverty. But for now I will continue to try and make people laugh.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I have never had a bad trip to Byron Bay. Not one. Whether relaxing at Wategos, arvo sips turned wild night the “Beachy”, hikes up Mount Warning, stand up paddle boarding through the rivers… It’s really got it all.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take then to, and why?
The MCG! Cause there is nothing better than watching the modern day gladiators (Hawks vs ?) go at it for 2 and a bit hours. I love that AFL crowd sits among each other, friend and foe alike. People from other countries find it weird that we’re not separated. Nah, I tell them, It’s the love of the game we’re here. Not for fights!

What are you currently reading?
My script for Puffs!

What are you currently listening to?
Podcasts… This American Life is a favourite and Dissect Season 3 (Season 2 was amazing!) and whatever Spotify throws into my daily mix.

Happiness is?
One of the many emotions we feel on a daily basis… But I like to think you find it in the smile of a stranger on the tram, a little dance step your doing (or you witness) while listening to music, the first bite of a fresh chicken schnitzel or hot chip, catching waves with your mates, singing songs at the top of your voice around a campfire, that first date that blows you away and you don’t wanna wait the 3 days before your meant to call or text. A compliment from one of your peers.

What does the future hold for you?
I think more writing fun and interesting stuff. A one man show perhaps. More TV and Film acting I hope and definitely more singing songs and travel.

Rob stars as Cedric in the Australian Premiere of PUFFS or Seven Increasingly Eventful Years at a Certain School of Magic & Magic at the Alex Theatre St. Kilda from 31 May 2018 (previews: 26 – 30 May). For more information, visit: www.puffstheplay.com for details.
