On the Couch with Lala Barlow and Robbi Smith

Lala Barlow and Robbi Smith AAR On the CouchWho is Lala Barlow and Robbi Smith?
Two fairly outgoing young Australians called Lala and Robbie who share a bedroom, an ideology on life and a sense of humor.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Carl Gustav Jung’s quote “What did you do as a child that made the hours pass like minutes? Herein lies the key to your earthly pursuits.” Sums it up beautifully!

Who inspires you and why?
Mr Fearlessness, Mrs Originality and their three children, Keep, Taking and Risks. Our collective parents are also pretty outstanding. Everyday superheroes right there.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
It seems there’s an endless list of wrongs to be made right. Realistically we think at the moment, there’s an abundance of young people out there being made to believe that life after high school or college has to follow some kind of preordained inflexible plan that involves a lot of sacrifice, long hours spent in a dark room, a job that makes you miserable and living to work rather than working to live. Strike that. Reverse it. Life is far too short.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Somewhere hot preferably, stinking of spontaneity. Zakynthos in Greece was a favourite. Prague is an absolute fairytale come true. But there’s always a welcome fondness for the simplicity and gentle greatness of Woolamai Beach on Phillip Island.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
In Summer, you can’t go past the Great Ocean Road and its surrounding beaches, waterfalls, sun-baking spots and cafes. In the colder months, tucking into some cheap and delicious dumplings at Chinatown followed by a trip to the Astor Theatre for some old Hollywood glamour. It’s still open right…?

What are you currently reading?
Have just finished Sue Tilley’s biography on the the great performance artist Lee Bowery, and about to start Iris Apfel: Accidental Icon.

What are you currently listening to?
The most recent Tony Award Nominated shows on Broadway. In addition to some Patti Smith and Jamie Cullum.

Happiness is?
Not needing to check the time, flip flops and no underwear, coffee and eggs, the honesty and authenticity of family and friends, gnocchi carbonara after a long absence and hard work paying off.

What does the future hold for you?
Hopefully semi-trailers full of creativity, good health, an abundance of world travel and exploration, so much laugher it hurts and lots of puppies that never grow up.
