On the Couch with Lachlan Hamill

Lachlan Hamill AAR On the CouchWho is Lachlan Hamill?
Just a guy who’s 24 and trying to make sense of it all.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
If I wasn’t performing, I think I’d want to be a travel journalist. I follow a few on instagram and I love the idea of never being in one place for too long but getting to experience the world with different people –  or a marine biologist.

Who inspires you and why?
My Mum. She’s such a strong person and has such a gentle soul. She taught me that sometimes you need to let your heart lead you, to follow what it wants. I am constantly inspired by her.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
I’ve come to terms with the idea recently that everything happens for a reason. We often try to find the reasoning behind everything and I think sometimes you need to just let it be. Everything that happens in this life is there to teach us something. I would love for more people to understand that.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
I haven’t travelled a whole bunch but I loved my time in NYC; the city and the people I met really just made me feel at home. I’ve never been to New Zealand but I have a two week hiking trip planned for next year, and from the photos I’ve seen and the things people have told me I think it’s already my favourite. I also follow this couple who are travel photographers and they make it look so picturesque.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I’d take them to my favourite restaurants, go and see something at fortyfive downstairs or Chapel Off Chapel, and then head to The Butterfly Club for Fab Fridays. I’d love to take them to the 1000 steps, it’s such a great place to just have a moment and think, and then find a little cafe somewhere to sit and chat.

What are you currently reading?
I’ve been trying to read On The Road by Jack Kerouac for like 3 months, it’s not going well… But I just finished The Power of the Actor by Ivana Chubbuck – which is incredible and has changed the way I think. I haven’t really had a whole lot of time recently to read so any suggestions would be appreciated.

What are you currently listening to?
I’ve been trying to steer clear of the Fugitive Songs cast recording but the music’s so good that I end up listening to it. I have recently rediscovered Jonathan Reid Gealt’s Here for You album. I’ve always been a massive fan of his music and lyrics and the album has some of most beautiful voices you’ve ever heard. Our MD Caleb Garfinkel recommended You+Me for inspiration and I’ve had that on repeat for a few weeks.

Happiness is?
Following what your heart wants and letting it lead you. Finding love in the work that you do and surrounding yourself with people that make you feel loved and supported.

What does the future hold for you?
I wish I knew. I would love to be apart of more Australian musicals, and a main stage show would be incredible. SONDER Theatre Company will continue to grow and produce theatre so I’m excited to share what our future has in store. I just hope that I get to be apart of projects that I connect to.

Lachlan is producing and can be seen in Fugitive Songs by award-winning songwriters, Chris Miller and Nathan Tysen at Chapel Off Chapel for a limited season from 29 August 2018. For more information, visit: www.chapeloffchapel.com.au or www.sondertheatreco.com.au for details.
