On the Couch with Kurt Phelan

Kurt Phelan AAR On the CouchWho is Kurt Phelan?
A self confessed vagabond, part time anarchist and professional sommelier. Born and raised on a mango farm in far North Queensland, who always wanted to be Gene Kelly.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
There’s nothing else I could or would rather do. When I’m not acting or creating theatre, I’m pairing wines with the perfect food for family, friends and clients. Who would choose to do anything else!

Who inspires you and why?
My father. Not only has he kept our family together thru the years, whilst battling cancer, two businesses and countless hurdles, he always has a smile, a kind ear and a calming story for anyone, no matter who they are.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Kindness and understanding go a long way. I try to use that daily to make the world better. I know it’s simple. But making people smile helps me imagine that I’m making a difference already.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Thailand. The beaches, the culture, the people and the food, oh lord! The food! Chicken Satay, beer and a tom yum… I’m sorry you’ll have to excuse me for a moment…

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I love the beach. I grew up in it and it’s my favourite place. I’d take them to do the Bondi to Coogee Walk and then to a glass of dry Riesling on the rooftop of the Coogee Palace.

What are you currently reading?
In Cold Blood (Truman Capote) – Sam Strong gave it to me during Twelfth Night at Queensland Theatre. Was he trying to tell me something?

What are you currently listening to?
Jake Shears (Scissor Sisters) – his debut solo album. It’s a killer!

Happiness is?
Sometimes a trap. But mostly good friends by your side (and puppies).

What does the future hold for you?
After I finish She Loves Me, I’m headed to Brisbane to launch an album I’ve recorded of a brilliant new song cycle, Any Moment. Then I’m off to NYC to follow my heart and see what it has in store. Though I’ll still call Australia home.

Kurt can be seen as Stephen Kodaly in She Loves Me at the Hayes Theatre until 22 September 2018. For more information, visit: www.hayestheatre.com.au for details.
