On the Couch with Kellie Rode

CFA-Kellie-Rode-AAR-On-the-CouchWho is Kellie Rode?
I am an actress performing in Come From Away in Melbourne. I grew up in the Yarra Valley and I’ve been so fortunate to have toured Australia, New Zealand, New York City and Asia throughout my career. Working on Come From Away in my hometown has been another dream come true and meeting the real Bonnie Harris from Newfoundland, Canada (whom I play in the show), was unfortgettably special.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
I am lucky enough to do what I love and I’ve never wanted to do anything else! Having said that, I would donate more of my time, money and energy to charities supporting disadvantaged children and environment conservation.

Who inspires you and why?
Marion Cotillard and Juliette Binoche inspire me to be a more truthful actress. People who are selflessly kind, like my Mum & Dad. Also, performing mothers! With two young children, I am acutely aware of the extraordinary juggle mothers navigate daily.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Keep performing, because I believe the arts create balance in our world. Also, as I get older and more aware of our good fortunes I make choices for the benefit of children in need and our environment. Teaching my children what they too can do to make positive change is one of the most important differences I can make.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
The Amalfi Coast, Italy… because it is, quite simply, breathtakingly beautiful. My husband and I stayed there soon after we were married and it was magical. The ocean was turquoise and the views were spectacular. I applauded the locals’ philosophy; good food, good wine, good company and family. Heaven!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Stomping Ground Brewery and Beer Hall in Collingwood because it’s fantastic! It epitomises Melbourne beautifully. The roof retracts in Summer and the fires are roaring in Winter. It’s a welcoming, industrial building draped in greenery – and the beer is sensational. I am somewhat biased, my Husband is one of the owners…

What are you currently reading?
Raising Girls by Steve Biddulph.

What are you currently listening to?
No Filter podcasts on the Mamamia Podcast Network. I’m inspired, fascinated and moved every single time.

Happiness is?
Living in a peaceful, beautiful country. Spending time with my family and friends who I love dearly. And, mostly, doing what I love, then coming home to my hubby and kids. Oh and eating spaghetti bolognese with a big, fat glass of Pinot Noir!

What does the future hold for you?
In the immediate future, the Melbourne season and tour of Come From Away. Then another creative adventure I’m sure. But not before some quality time with my family. Lots of busy school pick ups and cosy bedtime cuddles in store.
