On the Couch with Katie Weston

Katie Weston Arts Review On the Couch mainWho is Katie Weston?
I am a fierce contemporary singer, actor, musician, composer, voice coach and performing arts teacher. I’ve always had many fingers in many pies while constantly gigging around Australia, producing and performing in music theatre and smashing through a Masters of Music Performance in Contemporary Voice from MCM and a Composition degree from VCA.

What would you do differently to what you do know?
I live by a no regrets philosophy!

Who inspires you and why?
I’m inspired by work that I connect to aesthetically and emotionally. It makes me want to be a better – a better songwriter, a better performer, a better musician, a better artist who cannot only connect with an audience, but can also fulfill themselves creatively simultaneously. A list? Sure: Brandon Boyd (Incubus lead singer/songwriter), Tori Amos (singer/songwriter), Ben Folds (singer/songwriter), Jason Robert Brown (composer), Ben Platt (singer/actor), Radiohead, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Tori & Darren Aronofsky (film directors), Charlie Kaufman (screenwriter), Ennio Morricone (composer), Robin Wright (actress). I am also inspired to be a better person by my amazing family and friends.

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Be kind to everyone. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Do what you can.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Although I’m an absolute sucker for an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora (which I have yet to experience), I have travelled extensively throughout South East Asia including Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia. The temples at Angkor Wat in Siem Reap are still the most breathtaking destination I’ve ever witnessed, dare I say spiritual.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
Brunch with puppy dogs, beers on St Kilda Beach and if we have time, cruise to Ashcombe Maze on the Mornington Peninsula.

What are you currently reading?
The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck by Mark Manson. Great stuff!

What are you currently listening to?
Albums: Radiohead – Moon Shaped Pool; Flight Facilities – Down To Earth; Client Liaison – Diplomatic Immunity, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Skeleton Tree, and the Spring Awakening – Cast Recording.

Happiness is?
Something that is yours and that you alone have the power to choose to be or deny.

What does the future hold for you?
Countless adventures and opportunities to create, love and grow.
