On the Couch with Kate Amos

Kate Amos AAR On the CouchWho is Kate Amos?
Kate Amos is a young Australian soprano who relishes singing opera and also loves the versatility of performing musical theatre. Currently she’s making her mainstage debut in the featured role of ‘Arkie Whiteley’ in world-premiere Australian work: Whiteley with Opera Australia in Sydney.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
In terms of work – I wouldn’t change a single thing! I’m so fortunate to do what I love. In terms of lifestyle – I might have kept my swimming years going a bit longer!

Who inspires you and why?
Many people from different walks of life – but mostly the wonderful opera singers who have gone before me forging incredible careers such as the likes of Dame Joan Sutherland – an Australian inspiration. Also, my singing teacher who is ever encouraging and inspiring me!

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
You can never have too much kindness or empathy – it doesn’t cost you a cent to reach out to another human being. Together we are stronger.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Ooooo tough one! Sunny far-north Queensland to escape the cold or beautiful Prague to soak up some enchanting European culture.

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
The MCG! Even if you’re not a big AFL or cricket fan – it’s such a fun, electric atmosphere and unlike anywhere else in the world. A true Melbourne experience!

What are you currently reading?
Brett Whiteley: Art, Life and the Other Thing by Ashleigh Wilson (biography based on the incredible life of Whiteley) Fabulously fascinating!

What are you currently listening to?
Anything and everything. Love my Panic at the Disco, Queen and Franco Corelli. There’s a mix for you!

Happiness is?
Inner peace, always having gratitude and taking a moment to recognise just how far you have come despite your adversities.

What does the future hold for you?
I’m delighted to be making my debut of ‘Barbarina’ in Sir David McVicar’s iconic production of The Marriage of Figaro in October with Opera Australia – also at the Sydney Opera House – an absolute ‘Mozart’ dream come true!

Kate stars as Arkie Whiteley in Opera Australia’s premiere season of Whiteley – currently playing at the Sydney Opera House until 30 July 2019. For more information, visit: www.opera.org.au for details.
