On the Couch with Karla Hillam

I am an Actress and Singer who is making my solo debut at Melbourne fringe with my show Ugly Duckling. Earlier this year you may have seen me on ABC’s The Warriors. But my best brag is being owner to Raph the Chow Chow, who looks like a baby Gorilla.

What would you do differently to what you do now?
Travel more and live in other cities (even for short stints). Last year I spent 6 weeks studying in NYC and I really felt like I got to experience the city in a different way.

Who inspires you and why?
Everyone. Getting out and about and seeing shows and live music. The great stuff really propels me forward and I often get my best ideas when I’m there

What would you do to make a difference in the world?
Make singing on the tram compulsory. Who doesn’t love a singing flash-mob to brighten their day? Start with Sax by Fleur East.

Favourite holiday destination and why?
Hoi An, Vietnam – 1. The Food – I love Vietnamese cuisine and I don’t think I’ve ever had a bad meal there; 2. The People – they are such lovely welcoming people; 3. Beach time – I love to lie on the beach to read and relax. Although there’s not much surf that means lots of floating; 4. Explore time – there’s plenty to explore and lots of history to discover; and 5. Shopping – here’s loads of local artisans selling their wares. Art, clothing, bags, you name it. Plus if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for, someone is always available to custom make-it. HEAVEN!

When friends come to town, what attraction would you take them to, and why?
I would take them to The Butterfly Club. There’s always something fabulous on that they wouldn’t get to experience in their home town. The club is down an alley & up a staircase. The shows are underground, edgy and distinct. The whole experience is what Melbourne is famous for.

What are you currently reading?
Blitzed by Norman Ohler it’s about the drug use and abuse of the Nazi’s and Hitler during WWII. It is terrifying and fascinating at the same time.

What are you currently listening to?
Tay Tay’s (Taylor Swift) new single Look what you made me do. I do a classic Tay Tay song in the show. Taylor is one of Duckie’s “spirit animals”.

Happiness is?
A sold out Melbourne Fringe debut for Ugly Duckling.

What does the future hold for you?
First up Ugly Duckling – A pop cabaret at The Butterfly Club for Melbourne Fringe, and then straight into rehearsal for The Memory of Water at Chapel Off Chapel in November.

Directed and co-written by multi-award winning international cabaret artiste Spanky, Karla performs Ugly Duckling at The Butterfly Club: 18 – 24 September as part of the 2017 Melbourne Fringe. For more information, visit: www.thebutterflyclub.com for details.
